Creanord EchoNEWS: December 2009
Welcome to the December issue of Creanord EchoNEWS. Creanord EchoNEWS aims to keep you informed of the latest developments at Creanord and in the fields of automated Ethernet service delivery,
SLA assurance and Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM).
On behalf of Creanord EchoNEWS team Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Ethernet Access Birth Certificate
A simple ping used to be enough to check the turn-up success. The end customer did not have any kind of proof that the Service Provider delivered what was agreed upon. Customer just had to trust the Service Provider that the service is built and delivered according to the contract.
This is partially the reason why many customers still have doubts and prejudice towards the Service Providers and the Service Provider is therefore usually the first instance who receives customer frustration when there are any service performance problems.
Building up the trust from the beginning is vital for extending the customer lifetime value. It also offers Service Providers the base for up-selling to the customer. The birth certificate validates that network connection's physical installation and provisioning is done
properly and that the new connection performs as required by the SLA. The birth certificate can also be used as a sign-off with the customer and as a baseline for future performance validation and comparisons.
Automated Birth Certificate
Creanord EchoVault aims to extend birth certificate concept by leveraging a comprehensive set of measurements - giving a total picture of the new network's quality and performance. Complete testing includes SLA-Meter, Traffic-Meter - Network Utilization and
Throughput-Meter measurements. The birth certificate results are saved for later use providing vital information and reference for example on how adjustments and configurations made during a maintenance window affected the networks quality - compared to the original situation.
Another key aspect of the birth certificate is the knowledge of the network's performance and quality for setting up the alert thresholds and tolerances. You don't have to trust on best guesses or approximate estimations when you have the End to End baseline measurements report showing what is the real quality and performance of your network.
Network performance improvements
During the birth certificate tests it's easy to notice and pinpoint possible network impairments. The results for network's quality, based on changes made on the network during the E2E baseline measurements are immediately visible. This enables fast debugging for any kind of network impairment.
After every maintenance window it is easy and convenient to check wheatear the quality and performance of the network changed into any direction.
Creanord EchoVault Birth Certificate measurements
The EchoVaults End to End baseline measurements give the Service Provider a full view to the quality and performance of a newly installed network connection.
The tests that will be done during the birth certificate measurements include the following:
RFC-2544 Througput Measurement
The fully-automated RFC-2544 Test Suite provides straightforward traffic stream setup and user-defined test parameters and thresholds. This gives the Service Provider a standards based Throughput results without any handheld test
equipment or on-site engineers. Test results include:
- Transmit & Receive rate (Mbps)
- Frame loss
- Frame sizes
- Out-of-order or duplicate packets
- Gaps and maximum gap size
- Latency and jitter
SLA-Meter measurements with the following KPI's, with 1 second granularity
- Packet loss (percent & count, gaps)
- Jitter (round trip and one way, with 1 us resolution)
- Delay (round trip and one way, with 1 us resolution)
Traffic-Meter
Bandwidth usage & packet statistics up to 1s resolution per customer site, service, application or SLA (per VLAN, Ethertype, ToS, CoS, DSCP, MAC, IP, etc.).
In-Service Throughput measurement
Verifies the throughput of Ethernet Virtual Circuits in-service, without affecting customer traffic. MetroNID & EtherNID units generate and analyze traffic flows up to full wire-speed at both layer 2 & 3. The units use actual customer traffic as part of the overall test pattern to validate committed throughput, burst performance, delay, jitter and frame loss.
While above mentioned tests might sound a lot to handle, rest assured that with professional tools provided by Creanord the whole process is efficient and simple. Just contact us and we'll help you get started right after holidays!
