EchoVault 5.0 introduces Real-Time Operational Intelligence, SLA Templates and Interactive Reporting

Welcome to August 2011 issue of Creanord EchoNEWS. EchoNEWS aims to keep you informed of developments at Creanord and in the fields of SLA assurance, automated Ethernet service delivery and OAM (Operations, Administration and Maintenance).

In this issue we'll dig deeper to the new EchoVault Release 5 and discuss Real-Time Operational Intelligence and Reporting requirements of customer and service centric Ethernet world. First we look at new metrics that have been frequently asked from us and then we'll go to the Interactive Web Reporting where ease of use is the key.

Where's my SLA Metrics?

Before Visualization and SLA Reporting can be discussed there needs to be agreed metrics that provides good view to the Ethernet SLA sold. EchoVault 5.0 will introduce two major enhancements in this field with Standard Deviation and Custom Percentile analytics. Both of the mentioned metrics have been asked by our customers and we're glad to be able to bring these reporting capabilities to our SLA analytics framework.

Standard deviation is a widely used measurement of variability or diversity used in statistics and probability theory. It shows how much variation or "dispersion" there is from the average. A low standard deviation indicates that the data points tend to be very close to the mean, whereas high standard deviation indicates that the data are spread out over a large range of values. Custom Percentile calculation has been introduced to allow flexible percentile configurations such as popular 95th percentile. The 95th percentile is calculated by first sorting the measured results in descending order, placing the largest results at the top of the list. Then the top 5% of results are excluded from the analysis. From the remaining sorted list of results, the largest one is called the 95th percentile. Also system I/O and CPU resources can be freed by calculating percentiles only for selected set of KPIs as percentile calculation is resource intensive operation. For example with SLA-Meter calculating percentiles for average delay and average delay variation KPIs and for loss ratio often makes sense. In this case percentile analysis is performed for 5 KPIs instead of all 25 KPIs available yielding up to 80 % savings in computation. Also resources can be saved for other system tasks for example by selecting median (50th percentile) and 95th percentile instead of all three percentiles as one to three custom percentiles can be freely chosen.

What's the deal with Maintenance Windows?

System that's responsible for Customer Centric Reporting simply needs to have Maintenance Window support. We're happy to be able to announce Maintenance Window support for any and all KPIs with EchoVault 5.0. This means that for the duration of a Maintenance Window, the data for KPIs (such as delay, delay variation and packet loss) is excluded from calculations and results shown to the user. The data is still kept in the database, but tagged as belonging to a Maintenance Window. Maintenance Windows can be configured in the future or in the past. Future Maintenance Windows are executed when the starting time is reached. Windows in the past are executed upon creation. If you add a Maintenance Window into the past, the data for the month in which the window is added is recalculated. Maintenance Windows can also be removed from the past. When removing, the user can choose to recalculate values or remove without recalculation.

Operational efficiency with SLA Templates

With EchoVault 5 you can now create AEDS Engine Templates with circuit profiles, roll-up values and more. AEDS Engine Templates can be selected after choosing Engine Type and Policy. The following parameter sections have values included in the template:

  • Enabled components
  • Engine Configuration
  • Circuits
  • Analytics
  • Events

It is possible to use the sections flexibly and use the template for some of the sections only. You can choose not to enforce the template for one or several of the sections simply by unchecking the Enforce checkbox in the section.

Real-Time Operational Intelligence and Interactive Reporting

Today we all require up-to-date information to support our decisions. When writing this article Hurricane Irene was approaching East Coast of US. Interactive web maps provided information and alerted cities needing to take actions to enforce infrastructure or evacuate citizens from their homes. Same goes to networks that businesses and private users have become to trust to be available and working. Since networks are critical many people in Service Provider and Customer IT organizations needs to know what's going on. The information about the current and past performance is valuable for them to decide where corrective actions are needed.

We have concentrated to Real-Time Operational Intelligence and Interactive Reporting for a long time now. With EchoVault 5 we take yet another step ahead by providing Interactive Day-by-Day Charts for Analytics and 3S Dashboard Metric and Period Views. This means that with a click of the mouse EchoVault visualizes past and current with Daily breakdown Bar Chart with interactive mouse over extra details, helping to understand if e.g. delay has been out of bounds for a while or just if the circuit just started behaving badly.

In addition to the above mentioned functionality Creanord EchoVault release 5.0 brings numerous important enhancements such as interactive Event Hotlinks from threshold crossing events, instant Portal Links, templates and wizards to improve workflow and improved user management.
